Languages
Intent
It is our intent at Pott Shrigley Church School to provide all of our children with a high-quality education in Languages, which develops their love of learning about other languages and cultures and helps provide them with an understanding of the world. Our curriculum has an emphasis on ‘Cultural Capital’. We want our pupils to become immersed in the cultures of the people whose languages they study and understand the important role that learning a language has for unlocking future opportunities. All Key Stage 2 pupils will be expected to achieve their full potential in their foreign language learning (French and Spanish), in order to feel confident engaging in spoken conversations, developing skills in reading, listening and writing, and understanding the importance of languages in their future. We believe that learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand and appreciate their own cultures and those of others, which feeds into our whole school values of koinonia, compassion and respect.
Implementation
At Pott Shrigley, our Languages curriculum has been thoroughly planned to encompass key knowledge and skills, following a clear progression from Year 3 to Year 6. Teachers follow the sequence of lessons from the Twinkl schemes of work, adapted for each class to suit our pupils and ensure coverage of a wide variety of topics and themes. Lessons are delivered weekly to ensure progression by building on prior learning, with vocabulary being revised, recalled, and consolidated whenever possible and appropriate. Performance is a key part of pupils’ language learning. The opportunities that we plan for this include: singing songs, enacting drama/role play activities and performing rhymes and stories.
Impact
Our Languages curriculum ensures that all pupils develop key language learning skills set out by the National Curriculum. We offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity and develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences. Verbal feedback is given within lessons, as its immediate nature allows for the fastest progress. Students will be given specific praise and targets so that they have a clear understanding of what they are doing well and how they can improve further. Our aim is to foster a love of languages within our children and a desire to further their learning beyond the classroom and develop linguists of the future.
